Bicycle maintenance – do it yourself easily (and with a smile)

When your bike is in good shape, the season starts without surprises. Maintaining a bicycle is something you can do at home – no engineering degree required. Wash it gently, check the tyres and pressure, adjust the brakes and gears, and lightly oil the chain. Regular maintenance extends the life of your bike, and come winter, it's worth giving it a rest – a 1 m² storage unit makes the perfect winter home.

5 maintenance tips to keep your bike in great shape year after year

1. Wash and dry your bike thoroughly

A gentle wash removes dirt that wears down components and shortens your bike's lifespan. Use a soft sponge and mild detergent, avoid spraying water directly into the bearings and hubs, rinse lightly and dry afterwards – your bike appreciates a good "towelling down" too.

2. Check the tyres: remove debris and keep the pressure right

Tyre condition determines both safety and how smoothly your bike rolls. Check the tread – a smooth surface is a sign it's time for a change. Remove stones, glass and other tyre enemies, and inflate to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. General rule: wider tyre, lower pressure.

3. Brakes and gears – your number one safety chain

A good bike rides nicely, but good brakes stop even nicer. Do the squeeze test: does the brake feel firm? If braking feels sluggish, adjust or replace the pads. Gears should shift with a "click", not a "clunk" – tighten any loose cables and bolts gently. When the gears work properly, hills feel a lot less like a personal insult.

4. Oil the chain – a light coat is all you need

Oil keeps the chain flexible and prevents rust. Apply a small amount of oil to the moving chain, rotate the pedals a few times and wipe off any excess – too much oil attracts dirt like a magnet.

5. Store your bike in a storage unit over winter – 1 m² is enough

When your bike gets its own home for the winter season, getting back on it in spring is a breeze. In a Cityvarasto storage unit, your bike is protected from damp and vandalism, access works without keys and without stress – and you free up space at home.

One square metre really does fit a bicycle – and there's even room for the helmet.
